Cards Crafts for Father's Day

Two Cute Paper Greetings Kids Can Give to Dad

© Christy Jones

These adorable Father's Day cards are fun for kids to make for dad. They can even trace their own hands for an extra special homemade touch.

Tracing kids' hands is a great way to make a homemade card into an extra special keepsake. These Father's Day cards use the kids' handprints to hold up a newspaper about the "World's Greatest Dad," or reach out and give dad a hug.

World’s Greatest Dad Card

This cute card looks like dad is reading the newspaper, and the Father’s Day headline is all about him. You can keep the newspaper simple (just a headline on a blank piece of paper) or get really creative and make a whole mock front page on the computer (you could even include a photo). This card may not let the world know your dad’s the greatest, but it will certainly let him know.

Things You’ll Need:

Make the World’s Greatest Dad Card

  1. Draw a large circle on one piece of flesh-colored paper. (You may want to trace a paper plate.) Cut out the circle.
  2. Draw a face and hair on the circle to make a picture of dad, or cut out scraps of paper for the eyes, nose, mouth, and hair and glue them to the circle.
  3. Cut the top corners of the colored paper off at an angle to make the shoulders. Glue the face to the top of the colored paper.
  4. Trace both hands on a sheet of flesh-colored paper. Cut out the hands.
  5. Cut a rectangle of white paper about 6 inches tall and 8 inches wide. Fold the paper in half, crease it, and unfold it. Write the headline “World’s Greatest Dad” on the right side of the paper. Add any other text or personal touches you want.
  6. Glue the edges of the backside of the newspaper to the body. Leave the center of the paper sticking up. Glue the hands to the sides of the newspaper.

A Hug For Dad Card

This special card is a self-portrait, with arms opening up to give dad a hug. This card will be even more special when you give a real hug along with it.

Things You’ll Need:

Make the Hug for Dad Card

  1. Draw a large circle on one piece of flesh-colored paper. (You may want to trace a paper plate.) Cut out the circle.
  2. Draw a face and hair on the circle to make a self-portrait, or cut out scraps of paper for the eyes, nose, mouth, and hair and glue them to the circle.
  3. Cut off the bottom 3 to 4 inches of the colored paper. Cut this strip in half from top to bottom to make the arms.
  4. Cut the top corners of the rest of the sheet of colored paper off at an angle to make the shoulders of the body. Glue the face to the top of the body. Write a Father’s Day message on the lower part of the body.
  5. Trace both hands on a sheet of flesh-colored paper. Cut out the hands and glue them to the ends of the arms.
  6. Glue the ends of the arms to the sides of the body, with the hand facing in. The arms will overlap each other. When you open the arms, the card will look like it’s reaching out for a hug.
