Clove snowmen made from cloves and marshmallows are a great craft to make for Christmastime or the cold winter months. They send a nice spicy smell into the air.

Snowmen, a popular theme for crafts and decorations at Christmastime and during the winter, can be created in a variety of ways. Schools and children’s groups are always looking for new ideas to create these jolly snow figures. The color and texture of marshmallows makes them a logical choice for creating snowmen.

Clove Marshmallow Snowmen Craft

This craft is not difficult to assemble, and is quite easy to complete with older children. The hard part is having enough marshmallows left to use for the snowmen. The materials are also common items and easy to assemble.

Materials (for two snowmen):

  • four large white marshmallows
  • two plastic bottle caps
  • toothpicks
  • whole cloves
  • cotton balls
  • craft construction paper
  • colored yarn
  • clear craft glue

Steps:

  1. Cloves are pushed into a marshmallow to create a face. Three more cloves are pushed into another marshmallow to create the body. (Hint: The cloves will go in easier if a hole is made in the marshmallow with a toothpick first. Then the cloves are turned as they are being pushed in.)
  2. The marshmallow with the face is glued on top of the body marshmallow. This is the basic snowman. (A third marshmallow makes the figure too unstable.)
  3. A bottle cap is used to create a hat. A colored cap can be used to create a hat, or a white cap can be colored.(Hint: If a white cap is colored, a permanent marker or paint will need to be used, or the color will not stay on. Caution should be used when any kind of toxic markers or paint are used around children.)
  4. A round piece of construction paper is cut, slightly bigger than the bottle cap. It is glued to the
  5. base of the bottle cap for the brim of the hat. The hat is glued to the top of the marshmallow head.
  6. Toothpicks are stuck in the marshmallow body for arms. A piece of colored yarn is tied around the "neck" for a scarf.
  7. Steps 1 - 5 are repeated to create a second snowman, or as many as desired.
  8. A piece of construction paper is cut for the base and the snowmen are glued onto it. The base is decorated with cotton balls for snow. Other props can be added, such as small trees, etc.

The snowmen can be personalized using different accessories and colors. They can also be displayed alone, in pairs or as a "family" group.

This craft can be placed on any flat surface and will leave a spicy clove scent in the air. It is nice at Christmastime or during the cold winter months.
