Easy to create and fun to play with, preschoolers will love making these simple bunny baskets, chick puppets and egg shakers at Easter time.
There are lots of Easter crafts for children to make, but kids can have even more fun if they can use their crafts after they make them. From decorative baskets for holding treats to imaginative puppets and musical instruments, kids can get a lot of play value from crafts. Try these Easter crafts with a group of young children one spring afternoon and watch the kids have fun for hours. Bunny BasketsUsing empty clear fruit cups, kids can make very cute bunny baskets to add as table favours for Easter dinner. Begin by gluing two googly eyes next to each other midway down the outside of the cup. Cut a small oval shape out of pink craft foam and glue it below the two eyes to make the bunny’s nose. Using white craft foam, cut two elongated ovals to make ears and two smaller elongated ovals to make the inside of the ears. Glue the pink ovals onto the white ovals using white craft glue. Use hot glue to attach the ears to the outside rim of the fruit cup. Cut a wired ribbon about five inches in length and hot glue it to the inside rim of the cup to make a handle. Before placing on the table, fill the cup with cotton balls and top with colourful Easter treats. Easter Chick PuppetIn the middle of the bottom of a white foam cup, poke a small hole using a pencil that is big enough to fit a straw through. To make the chick, cut a bumpy piece of yellow pipe cleaner long enough to have four bumps. Fold the bumps on either end of the pipe cleaner in towards the middle so there are two doubled up bumps. Twist the pipe cleaner in the middle to secure the two ends. An adult will need to help the children make two oval shapes at either end of the pipe cleaner where the bumps are doubled up. Move the pipe cleaner around so it looks like the head and body of the chick. Glue a small orange triangle made of construction paper and googly eyes on the head part of the chick. Attach the chick to one end of a straw using hot glue. Feed the straw through the hole in the foam cup to make the puppet. Show the kids how the puppet works by making the chick ‘pop’ out of its foam egg. Easter Egg ShakersFor a festive spin on traditional egg shakers, fill plastic Easter eggs with a teaspoon of popcorn seed. Use hot glue around the edge of the egg cup halves before joining together to make the whole egg again. This will prevent the popcorn seeds from spilling out. Using washable puff paint, let the kids decorate their Easter eggs. When the eggs are dry, the kids can play with the shakers and use them in an Easter egg hunt. Sometimes the simplest craft ideas give young children just what they need to broaden their interest in a holiday. Bring out the craft supplies and challenge the kids to make this the most creative Easter ever!
