This perfect kids' Christmas craft is fun for kids 6 and over. The end result is adorable; it will be tempting to leave the Nativity Set out all year long.

This is an adorable craft that children will enjoy giving to their family for the holidays. It is simple but will take some time for the paint to dry, although acrylic paint does dry quicker than other forms. The Flower Pot Nativity Craft will cost around $3 for each child, depending on the amount needed.

Items Needed for Christmas Craft

  • 3 small terra cotta flower pots
  • 2 1 ½ inch wood ball knobs
  • 4 3/8 inch round head plugs
  • 1 11/16 wood boy
  • 1 brown chenille stem
  • Acrylic paints in the following colors: flesh tone, light blue, brown, light brown, and burgundy
  • Extra scraps of material in white and brown print
  • Paint brushes
  • Felt tip pins in black, brown and dark blue
  • Raffia
  • Glue dots or a hot glue gun
  • Mod Podge

Directions for Nativity Craft

  1. First paint both wood ball knobs flesh tone and the head part of the wood boy, who will become Baby Jesus. Set all three aside to let dry. Acrylic paint dries quickly, so it will not take very long. Apply a second coat and let dry.
  2. Then paint the flower pots as follows or as desired: one light blue for Mary, one burgundy for Joseph, and the last one should be brown for the manger. Once the first coat is dry, reapply and let dry completely.
  3. Glue the heads and hands on to the body of the terra cotta flower pots. A hot glue gun will give more staying power but can be dangerous for young children. Use glue dots if teaching the craft to a large number of kids and hot glue guns are limited or dangerous to use.
  4. Using the felt tip pins, draw faces on to the heads. Use the brown pin for the facial details like eyebrows, nose and mouth. Use black for the eye outline and blue for the iris of the eyes.
  5. Use finger or cotton swab to paint the hair on to Mary and Joseph.
  6. To set the paints, apply a couple thin layers of Mod Podge and let dry over night. Use matte or glossy, depending on the desired effect. This step can be skipped.
  7. With the chenille stem, fold in half and twist together. Then bend into a staff shape. Glue into the hands of Joseph.
  8. Wrap a small square of white fabric around the body of baby Jesus and glue. Wrap another small strip of white fabric around the top of Mary’s head. Wrap a small strip of brown print fabric around the head of Joseph.
  9. Glue small strips of raffia in to the brown flower pot and place Baby Jesus inside. Baby Jesus can be glued inside or left unglued to lie in the manger. Since he is wood and unbreakable, small children will enjoy holding him.

To use for decorations, set the Nativity set on a small piece of white batting to display.
