This is an activity that allows children to create a gift for their grandparents in celebration of National Grandparents Day, when families honor the elder members.

Many schools and children’s organizations like to have a craft or activity to do with the children for National Grandparents Day. The celebration of this holiday is becoming more widespread each year. The following craft makes a nice gift for a child to give to a grandparent(s).

National Grandparents Day

Some background facts about National Grandparents Day:

  • National Grandparents Day was the idea of a West Virginia housewife named Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade. She started a campaign for this holiday in 1970.
  • In 1973, Governor Arch Moore proclaimed the first Grandparents Day in West Virginia.
  • In 1978, the United States Congress passed legislation declaring that the first Sunday after Labor Day would be recognized as National Grandparents Day. This legislation was signed by then President, Jimmy Carter.
  • Having the holiday in September is significant because grandparents are often thought of as being in the "autumn" of life.
  • The three objectives of Grandparents Day are to honor grandparents, to give grandparents a chance to show love to their grandchildren and to help children become aware of what older people have to offer.

This craft gift idea can be personalized for a particular person or shared between two grandparents. It can also be adapted for other holidays or occasions.
