Dads are often difficult to buy gifts for and kids really want to show how much they appreciate everything dad does. For Father’s Day this year, help the kids make a thoughtful and simple homemade present that will show dad how wonderful he is.
Great for dads who have a sweet tooth, this edible craft is easy to do with a group of kids. Buy a bag of traditional style pretzels (the twisty ones), a bag of coloured chocolate candy such as Smarties or M&M’s, and a bag of Hershey Kisses. Spread the pretzels in a single layer on a baking sheet and let the kids place a Hershey Kiss in the centre of each pretzel.
Place the pretzel filled baking sheet in the oven at 200 degrees for about 5 minutes, until the chocolate starts to soften, but not completely melt. Pull the pan out of the oven and place a candy onto each chocolate kiss. Let the pretzel treats cool in the freezer and put them in a decorative container such as mug or box for gift giving.
Coat the outside of an empty and clean juice can with white glue. Starting at the top, help the child wrap the juice can with a multicolour yarn or binder twine by laying each strand next to the previous one. The graphics on the juice container should be completely covered. Once the can is dry, write a special Father’s Day note and place the message inside the can as a surprise for dad.
Especially appropriate for dads who work in an office, this gift brings the gift of health too! Have the kids paint the outside of a medium sized clay pot using poster paint. Once the paint is dry, help the kids put potting soil inside the pot. Plant a baby spider plant in the pot with the kids and help them look after it for a few days until it takes root. The kids can take it home to dad once the plant is thriving.
Purchase inexpensive picture frames made from wood or a wood finish from a discount store. Using a variety of dried beans, let the kids glue beans around the outside of the frame, making their own patterns and designs. Once the frame is dry, insert a photo of the child or a picture the child has drawn.
These easy to make crafts can also be given as gifts for Mother’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, Christmas and they would also be thoughtful gifts for teachers.
