Tis the season of arts, crafts and spending extra time with your kids. What better way than to create your very own snow globe!

Making holiday crafts isn’t just a way to bond with your child, but a great tool to teach the value of giving. What better gift to give than one your child created by him or her self? These snow globes are easy to create, giving your child room for imagination, and grandparents and friends a like are sure to love them!

Snow Globe Materials

What You’ll Need:

Baby food jars work the best, but you can be imaginative and shop your local dollar stores or candle shops to find lidded jars. Just make sure the lids are able to twist on, or are metal.

The next most important materials for this craft are epoxy glue for your lid and glycerin for the floating-snow effects. You want to make sure your globe will be securely attached so the contents have no way to spill out. Epoxy glue is the best answer for this. Just a few drops of glycerin will give your globe the snow-falling effect.

Your remaining materials should consist of some type of covering for the lid (paint, construction paper, felt, wrapping paper, cloth and remember glue to secure this with), a holiday figurine for the inside (miniature Christmas tree decorations work perfect for this, but the creativity here is limitless) and glitter. Large flakes of glitter are suggested for a prettier snow globe. If desired you can also put a ribbon around the neck of the jar, and/or red and green beads glued to the top for “holly” as a final touch.

Making a Snow Globe

Together with your child, take the epoxy glue and secure your holiday figurine to the bottom of the jar. While it sets, let your child decorate and cover the lid of the jar, using glue or hot glue if you’re not using paint.

Let your child fill the jar ¾ full with water and add a few drops of glycerin. Then add the glitter, carefully observing the rate of “snow fall” in the water. If you wish for the glitter to fall slower, add more glycerin.

Add epoxy glue to the inside of your lid and twist or attach onto the jar and let dry. Add your final touches, whether it is a ribbon or some form of decoration on the top of the jar, and you and your child have made a beautiful snow globe to display on your mantel or give as a present!

Whether this creative holiday craft becomes a new tradition, or just something to try out for fun with your child, it is sure to boost his or her imagination and self esteem at being able to create something so unique!
