Make These Easter Peeps Peeking Out of Their Shells

These Easter chicks are easy to make and a perfect favor or table decoration just in time for spring.

Spring is finally here and with it comes Easter. Easter is a wonderful time when Christians everyone celebrate a special holiday. Easter and what it stands for, resurrection of a Savior, brings thoughts of new life. Eggs and chicks, spring flowers budding and baby bunnies are symbols of that newness as well. Everyone loves the fun chicks and bunnies spring and Easter bring so why not make some of your own this year?

Easter Decorations Made Easy

These cute Easter chicks can be made in a variety of colors. You can place them in the kid's Easter baskets, use them as place settings at your Easter dinner or as table decorations. You can even write names on the egg shells for a personalized touch. The ideas are only limited to your imagination

Easter Chicks

What you need to make 2 chicks:

  • 2 cotton balls
  • 1 half of an egg shell
  • 2 tiny black wiggly eyes
  • 1 orange beak cut from orange construction paper.
  • craft glue
  • powdered tempera paint – yellow – or your favorite colors
  • baby powder

Preparing the Egg Shells

Carefully crack an egg in half so you have 2 pieces of shell. Gently wash the egg shell and make scrambled eggs with the egg. Let shells dry. These are your project shells.

Preparing the Paint

Mix 1 teaspoon of the powdered tempera paint with 2 teaspoons of baby powder. Use yellow for realistic looking chick or use all the colors of the rainbow.

Directions:

  1. Place the cotton balls in a small plastic bag, add the paint and powder mix and gently shake to mix. Carefully remove the balls shaking off the excess.
  2. Place one cotton ball into each egg shell. Place a small dab of glue in the bottom of the shell first to help hold the chick in place.
  3. Glue on the wiggly eyes and the beak. You call also punch holes from black construction paper with a hole punch for your eyes.

Note: You could also dye the egg shells first and use colored pom poms in place of coloring the cotton balls.

Spread Some Easter Cheer

These adorable chicks are not just for Easter. They are fun to make to go along with a study on birds, a fun Old MacDonald had a Farm theme or a nature study. Make up a dozen place them in an egg carton and pass them out to shut-ins at your local nursing home. There are many great ways you can use this simple and easy kid's craft to not only decorate your house but bless someone else.
