Using recycled materials and easy to find supplies, preschoolers and toddlers can make cute and simple crafts to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

St. Patrick’s Day is steeped in the traditions of shamrocks, leprechauns, pots of gold and magical things that thrive in the imaginations of children. Enjoy the lighthearted fun of St. Patrick’s Day with kids by making some simple crafts to mark the occasion.

Coffee Filter Shamrock

Help the kids cut out shamrock shapes from basket style coffee filters. To get the coffee filters to lay flat before tracing and cutting the shamrock, press the filters under a heavy book overnight. Have the kids draw on the filters using washable yellow and blue markers. Using a clean paint brush let the kids paint water all over the shamrock so they can see the blue and yellow marks blend to make green. Glue the finished shamrock onto a black piece of construction paper to make it stand out.

Egg Carton Leprechaun Hat

From an empty egg carton cut out one “cup” for each child and paint the outside of the cups green. Cut circles out of green construction paper a little wider than the widest part of the egg cups. Glue the egg cup upside down to the construction paper circle using hot glue, making the leprechaun hat. Spread clear craft glue over the hat and then roll in green glitter. When the hats are dry, use them as table decorations for a St. Patrick’s Day dinner featuring Leprechaun Treats.

Shamrock Magnet

Cut shamrock shapes approximately 2 inches in diameter out of green craft foam and let the kids decorate them with glitter glue, sparkles and ribbons. Some children may want to make shamrock faces by adding small googly eyes and drawing on facial features. Glue the finished shamrock onto the lid of an empty frozen juice container and then hot glue a magnet onto the underside of the lid. Have the kids make more than one shamrock magnet and donate the extras to a nursing home to be given to the residents as a memento of St. Patrick’s Day.

Rainbow with Pot of Gold

Have the kids paint the outside of small empty yogurt or fruit cup containers with black paint. While the paint is drying, make rainbows by cutting a paper plate in half and then have the kids colour stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple on both sides of the plate. Make a vertical cut 2 ½ inches in from one end of the rainbow so it fits over the edge of the cup. This will make the rainbow look like it is going into the pot and kids can add a picture of a leprechaun for a finishing touch. Fill the pot with foil wrapped candies and use it as a table centerpiece on St. Patrick’s Day.

Kids love theme based crafts and St. Patrick’s Day is a great occasion for children to immerse themselves in creative projects just for fun. So, bring out all the odds and ends of green craft materials and let the kids enjoy creating their own bit of Irish tradition!
