A beautiful Thanksgiving craft that brightens the home for the holiday season and preserves children's footprints for years to come.
Children change from month to month in their early years. Parents love capturing the unique shape of their child’s footprint in every season. In this project, kids embellish their footprint with tissue paper turkey feathers to make a sun catcher glowing with autumn colors.
Materials:
- Clear contact paper
- Brown construction paper
- Tissue paper (red, yellow, and orange)
- Yarn
- Hole punch
Instructions Parents May Want To Complete Ahead of Time:
- Trace the outline of a large pot onto an unpeeled piece of contact paper.
- Trace the pot onto a piece of brown construction paper.
- Cut out the circles of contact and construction paper.
- Peel the backing from half of the contact paper.
- Fold the brown construction paper circle in half.
- Cut out the center of the construction paper circle leaving a half-inch frame for the turkey’s tail feathers.
- Cut a ruffled edge to the outside of the circle resembling tail feathers.
- Unfold the frame.
- Cut along the creases to get two half circles (if only making one sun catcher, one half circle can be discarded.)
- Unpeel half the backing from the contact paper circle.
- Place the half circle frame on the sticky, edge of the unpeeled half of the contact paper circle.
Instructions for Making a Turkey Sun catcher
- Trace child’s foot onto brown construction paper.
- Cut out the footprint.
- Allow child to tear a pile of feather shaped strips of red, orange, yellow, and brown tissue paper.
- Allow child to fill in the frame with tissue paper tail feathers.
- Let child decorate his footprint as a turkey, the heel is the turkeys head.
- Make a construction paper beak and wattle, and draw two eyes.
- Peel the backing from the other half of the contact paper circle.
- Place the footprint turkey body on the middle of the folded edge of contact paper.
- The turkey should be facing out toward the sticky clear side of the contact paper.
- Press the contact paper over the turkey’s tail feathers to seal the sun catcher.
- Use a hole punch to make a hole in each of the top corners of the sun catcher.
- Thread yarn or twine into the holes and tie for a hanger.
- Tape the sun catcher in the window.
Display the project in the kitchen window for the whole family to appreciate. Kids and parents will enjoy the warm glow of this turkey craft throughout the Thanksgiving season. And once the holidays are over, parents can keep the project in a photo album or memory box. For another seasonal suncatcher, parents can read about how to preserve their children's handprints with an autumn colored forest.
