April is full of lots of interesting dates and events. It is National Garden Month, National Frog Month, National Recycling Month and Month of the Young Child. Here are a few more events and some fun activities to help kids and their families celebrate them.
Washington Irving (April 3, 1783), Dorothea Dix (April 4, 1802), William Booth (April 10, 1942) Henry Clay (April 12, 1777), Butch Cassidy (April 13, 1866), Thomas Jefferson (April13, 1743), Samuel Chase (April 17, 1741), Clarence Darrow (April 18, 1857), Babe Ruth (April 27, 1947) and James Monroe (March 18, 1758) were all born in March.
Look up anyone you don’t know and read about them. Make a poster of famous people born in March. Who can you add to the list?
Born in Denmark in 1805 Hans wrote over 150 fairytales. Spend the day watching stories such as Cinderella. Read a fairytale to a younger sibling. Act out a story he wrote.
On this day in 1860 the first Pony Express rider headed out with the mail from St. Joseph, MO. Visit the library and check out a book on the pony express. Write a letter to a friend. Take a field trip to the Post Office to see how mail is delivered today.
Robert E. Peary and his team finally reached the North Pole on this momentous day. Throw a North Pole party! Make hot chocolate; eat ice cream and snow paint on the table. (Use shaving cream to finger paint.)
Major Christian holiday around the world. Celebrate by going to church with your family. Enjoy a special dinner with your family and take time to enjoy each other.
The midnight ride of Paul Revere took place on this day. Mr. Revere’s ride warned the Americans of the British which were approaching fast. Do some research on this fascinating patriot who was also a silversmith. Try making some spoons or cups out of modeling clay.
Earth Day – April 22nd
Our earth is a precious resource we need to protect. Join in helping by picking a project – plant some flowers, pick up trash in your neighborhood, put out some bird feeders or help an elderly neighbor with their lawn.
He was born on the 23rd in 1564 and died on the same day in 1616. Honor Shakespeare on this day by attending a ply or putting on one yourself. Watch Romeo and Juliet or read one of his books.
Go play in the dirt during this week. Plant some flowers or grow some vegetables. If you can plant them outside grow some in a windowsill.
