February is full of lots of interesting dates and events. It is a American Heart Month, Black History Month, Library Lover’s Month and Nation Children’s Dental Health Month. Here are a few more events and some fun activities to help kids and their families celebrate them.
On this day in 1709 Alexander Selkirk was rescued from a deserted island he had been marooned on. His adventure was the basis for the book Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Read this book during February/
Will the ground hog see his shadow? Will spring come early or will there be 6 more weeks of winter. Take a family poll and see who wins. Look up groundhogs and make a poster about them.
Elizabeth Blackwell was the first women doctor. She was born in 1821 in England. She received her medical degree in New York in 1849. She helped train and recruit nurses during the Civil War. Read a book about this fascinating woman. Visit a hospital and find out what nurses do.
Norman Rockwell – (Feb. 2, 1894), Charles Lindbergh - (Feb. 4, 1902), John Witherspoon – signer of the Declaration of Independence (Feb. 5, 1900), Aaron Burr – (Feb. 6, 1756), “Babe” Ruth (Feb. 6, 1895), William Henry Harrison (Feb.9, 1773), Thomas Edison (Feb 11, 1847), Frederick Douglas (Feb. 1817), Susan B. Anthony (Feb 15, 1852) were all born in February. Celebrate the birthdays of these people by painting a picture, reading a book on flight, playing a game of baseball or memorizing the names of the presidents.
We are halfway done winter. (Or is it? Did you ask the groundhog?) Officially we are anyway. Have a winter party. Make snowman treats, drink hot chocolate and play beach music in anticipation of summer.
William Baden-Powell started the scouts in England and it American branch was started on this day by William Boyce. Even if you are not a scout look at your local library for a merit badge book and do the requirements to earn it.
Have a Valentine’s Day party. Invite all of your favorite people. Make handmade cards to let them know you love them. Serve heart cookies, small bags of candy kisses and red punch.
This is the day given to honor Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12, 1809) and George Washington (Feb. 22, 1732). Other presidents are often honored on this day as well. Bake a cherry pie and build a miniature log cabin on this day.
To celebrate this fun week put out a bird feeder or make a nesting bag. You will enjoy watching the birds come to your backyard and they will be appreciating your efforts.
Have pancakes for breakfast lunch and dinner. Make them in all shapes and sizes! Eat them all week, roll things up in them and cover them with syrup, powdered sugar or fruit. The ideas are endless.

Fat Tuesday is a time of fun and celebration in mainly New Orleans. Have your own Mardi Gras celebration. Invite your friends, dress up in costumes, wear lots of beads and have a parade.

Directions:
Combine pancake mix, cocoa and sugar in large bowl. Stir in water with wire whisk until large lumps disappear. Add walnuts and chocolate chips, stir until evenly mixed. Let batter rest for five minutes. Cook according to package directions. Serve warm with Aunt Jemima Syrup
Yield: 14 Pancakes
