Make Batik Easter Eggs

Create Beautiful Eggs for Easter with this Easy Craft for Kids

Feb 11, 2009 Belinda Mooney

Kids can make decorated Easter eggs that have a batik art feel with this simple but creative craft technique.

In pagan cultures the egg was symbolic of the world. It represented annual rebirth of the earth from the cold, bleak, barren part of the year into the warmer, fruitful seasons of spring and summer. Christians incorporated the symbolic meaning of the egg as man’s spiritual rebirth and new life in Christ.

The coloring and decorating of eggs comes down from ancient times as well. Colored Easter eggs were quite common in the Middle Ages and well documented throughout history. Czar Alexander of Russia commissioned an artist named Fabergé to create an Easter gift for his wife that would very special. Thus began the creation of the stunning Fabergé eggs which can be seen in museums today. And while you might not create an egg as elegant and costly as Fabergé – you can make some amazing Easter eggs with your own kids.

Make your Own Batik Easter Eggs

One fun way to color Easter eggs is to make Batik eggs. It’s fun and easy to do. Just follow these simple directions.

You will need:

  • white or very light colored crayons or rubber cement
  • Easter egg dye – purchased or make your own
  • Eggs – either empty shells or hard boiled

What you do:

  1. First prepare your Easter egg dye and have it ready to go.
  2. Use the crayons to color patterns on the egg. White is hard to see. Using a light yellow can make it easier for kids to see what they are drawing. If using rubber cement, let the eggs dry before you place them in the dye.
  3. Next, place your eggs in the dye and let them set for a few minutes. When the eggs are as dark as you want take them out of the dye. Let them dry for at least six hours.
  4. When the eggs are dry carefully wipe off the crayon wax or rubber cement. The area underneath now shows through the color. If you used crayon, you can simply leave it on – it will still have a batik look and neat raised color look.

Your Easter eggs designs are only limited to your imagination and creativity. And don’t just include the kids – Easter eggs can be fun for the whole family. They also make fun little gifts to share with family and friends. So gather up your Easter egg decorating supplies and some kids and start an egg dyeing tradition – you'll be glad you did.
