Supplies for Making String Christmas Ornaments
The supplies needed for this favorite holiday project are ones that can be found in most parents’ craft closets. For only a few cents, parents can make Christmas memories with their child to last a lifetime.
Crafters will need…
- White, red, green, or yellow yarn
- Elmer’s Glue
- Red, green or yellow food coloring
- Cups or dishes to mix the glue and food coloring
- Wax paper
Parents Preparation for the Holiday Craft
To ensure the project goes smoothly, parents can take care of a few important steps beforehand. Of course, any craft involving glue, glitter, and food coloring has a potential to get messy. Having everything laid out and ready ahead of time is the best way parents can be available to give their full attention to the project.
Steps to be done ahead of time include…
- Cut a bunch of five to six inch lengths of yarn.
- Fill several small cups with a bit of glue
- Mix into all but one of them several drops of food coloring
- Tape sheets of wax paper at each child’s work surface
- Fill a tub with warm water and several wash clothes to wipe excess glue from hands during the project.
Instructions for Making String Art Christmas Ornaments
- Once parents have all the supplies in order, it’s time to get started.
- Dip a piece of yarn into one of the cups of glue.
- Lay the yarn in the center of the wax paper.
- Choose another piece of yarn and dip it into the glue.
- Lay the second piece on top of the first.
- Continue this until completing a desired shape or pattern.
- Sprinkle some glitter on the ornament if desired.
- Place the wax paper and ornament in an out-of-the-way spot where it can dry.
- Allow the ornament to dry completely before removing it from the wax paper with a spatula.
- Thread a piece of ribbon or yarn through a hole in the top of the ornament to use as a hanger.
- Punch a hole with scissors if necessary.
- Hang the string art ornament on the tree or window and enjoy.
Once the glue is dried, the ornaments will have a stained-glass look. With their sparkling glitter and colorful translucence, these ornaments are wonderful to show off near a strand of lights on the Christmas tree.
