Homemade play dough is a special addition to Halloween fun when it’s colored orange and has a spicy, fall scent. This simple recipe for scented play dough can be made for a children’s Halloween party, as a trick or treat give-away or to add a bit of fun to the usual play dough time.
Ingredients for Homemade Halloween Play Dough
- 1 ½ cups cornstarch
- ½ cup flour
- 2 cups water
- 2 teaspoons cream of tarter
- 1 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
- Several drops red and yellow food coloring
Directions for Making Homemade Play Dough
- Add all ingredients, except food coloring, to a medium-sized pot.
- Stir to mix play dough ingredients. The mixture will be a liquid at this point.
- Mix red and yellow food coloring in a separate dish until desired color of orange is achieved.
- Add orange food coloring to pot with the rest of the homemade play dough ingredients.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring often.
- Play dough will form in roughly five to seven minutes.
- Remove from heat and spoon the play dough onto waxed paper or a cookie sheet.
- When the homemade play dough has cooled, knead until the dough is pliable.
- Maintain freshness by storing in a plastic container when not in use.
Tips for Making Homemade Play Dough
To get a uniform color, add the food coloring when the mixture is still a liquid. Once the play dough has formed, the color is not likely to mix well and will create a marbled effect.
New, homemade play dough is very hot. To prevent injury, keep away from children until it has cooled.
Children’s Halloween Party Activity with Play Dough
Set up a play dough table at a children’s Halloween party. Make enough homemade, scented play dough for each young guest. Set out pumpkin-shaped cookie cutters, plastic knives and forks and rolling pins. Give a small baggie of homemade, Halloween play dough to each guest as a party favor.
