Mother's Day Cards Kids Can Make

Cute Paper Crafts That Say I Love You

Here are three handy cards kids can help make to give to their moms for Mother's day, or any day they want to say "I love you."

These loving mother’s day cards are made by tracing the child’s hands, great for a personal (and memorable) touch. And they’re made with only basic craft supplies, such as paper (colored paper works especially well), scissors, glue, tape, and crayons, colored pencils, or markers.

Young children will need help tracing their hands and cutting the paper. Older kids can do most of these crafts on their own, but they may need a hand with the tracing (and with spelling).

I Love You This Much

This card can be made two ways, and looks like it’s giving mom a hug. To make the card, fold a sheet of paper in half. Trace both of the child’s hands on a separate sheet of paper. Cut out the paper hands along the tracing lines and have the child color them.

To make a simple card (best for young children), open the card and glue the back of one hand to each side of the card, so that the fingers are sticking out. When the card is opened, it will look like hands spread wide.

To make a bigger hug (works for older children or those with help), make springs from strips of paper. Cut four strips of paper, each about 1” wide and 11” long. Place two of the strips at right angles and overlap the corners. Fold the bottom strip snugly over the top strip. Continue folding the bottom strip over the top strip until the paper forms a little spring. Fold the other two strips of paper together the same way. Open the card and lay it flat. Glue one end of each spring to the back of a hand, and the other to each side of the card. Tuck the hands inside when closing the card. The hands will “spring” out for a fun surprise.

Decorate the front of the card as desired. Write a mother’s day message on the card, such as “Mom, I love you this much!”

I Love You Sign

This cute card says “I love you” in sign language while offering a pretty flower. You can use an artificial flower, or make a flower from construction paper or tissue paper. Use a strip of paper or a pipe cleaner for the stem. For the card, you can use a plain sheet of paper, or a sheet of paper folded in half.

Place the child’s hand, with the fingers slightly spread, on a piece of paper and trace around it. Cut out the paper hand along the tracing lines and have the child color it.

Glue the back of the hand, the thumb, index finger, and pinky finger to the card. Leave the middle and ring fingers unglued. Place the flower stem over the hand and tape it to the card. Bend the middle and ring fingers over the flower stem and glue the finger tips to the palm of the hand. Write a mother’s day message on the card, such as “This flower is a sign I love you, Mom.”

Heart and Hands

Have the child place his or her hands on a blank sheet of paper, so that the index finger tips and thumbs are touching each other. This makes the area between the hands look like a heart. Trace the child’s hands. Have the child color in the hands and the area between them. (Red works especially well for the heart.) Write a mother’s day message on the card, such as “Mom: You have my heart in your hands.”
