Sometimes the best Mother's Day gifts are from the hearts and tiny hands of small children. Try making one of these three simple homemade crafts for mom this May.

Mother's Day gifts made by preschoolers and young children are some of the most touching, heartfelt keepsakes for moms. A homemade present says, "I love you" to mom better than any chocolates, flowers, or store-bought cards ever could. Homemade gifts for Mother's Day do not have to be complicated or elaborate. The three ideas included here can be easily made by small children individually at home or in groups at daycare or a preschool classroom.

Mother's Day Handprint and Poem Card

There are a multitude of handprint poems online that can be perfectly paired with a child’s tiny handprint, but the best poems from children are always short and simple. Here is an example of a handprint poem that can be used for a very touching Mother’s Day card:

This little hand will never grow.

This little hand will stay just so.

When I’m grown and far away,

This little hand with you will stay.

~Author Unknown

Simply help a preschooler make a handprint on a piece of white paper with finger paints. Then place the chosen poem at the bottom and have the child sign her name. Mount and laminate the card so it will keep.

Mother’s Day Picture Frame Gift

Making a beautiful picture frame is a craft that little children love to do. There are so many variations of this activity. Picture frames can be made from stiff cardboard or a plain wooden frame can be painted and decorated. Another idea would be to purchase a wooden shape such as a heart, decorate it, and mount a picture onto it after it is fully dried. Try these frame-decorating ideas for preschoolers:

  • Fingerprints
  • Beads, buttons, and bells
  • Small dried or plastic flowers
  • Simple weaved ribbon
  • Colorful paper dots from hole-punch
  • Small pieces of crunched tissue paper
  • Glitter glue or stickers
  • Seashells
  • Collage with colorful magazine pictures
  • Recycled wrapping paper

The most important part of this Mother’s Day gift is to obtain a picture of the child, or the child with mom without her knowing that it will be used for a present. This step in the activity should be very easy using a digital camera.

Mother’s Day Handmade Jewelry Gift

Moms love jewelry, and young kids will practice their fine motor skills by threading beads or buttons for this Mother’s Day craft idea. If a child is too young to do this, then the beads, buttons, or other items can be glued to a pin back. Pins, bracelets, and necklaces can all be handmade by children in preparation for this special day for moms. Try any of these five variations for handmade Mother’s Day jewelry:

  1. Buttons, beads, and seashells can all be glued to a dated, initialed pin back.
  2. Beads threaded on a pipe cleaner can be coiled and glued to a pin back.
  3. Buttons can be threaded to stretchable jewelry wire and tied off for a fun Mother’s Day bracelet.
  4. Letter beads can be threaded onto a jewelry wire or pipe cleaner to spell mom’s name or a short expression of love.
  5. Seashells with a small hole can be decorated with paint or glitter glue, then threaded to make a necklace for mom.

Mother’s Day gifts that are handmade by preschool children will be among the most treasured of all for moms. A present for mom’s special day can be crafted by hand at school or at home with a caregiver or dad and although it may be inexpensive, simple, and quick, the effort will not go unnoticed. Moms will truly appreciate the hard work and thought that goes into a handmade Mother’s Day gift.
