When autumn comes, teachers and group leaders look for fun craft ideas that will result in colorful fall decorations, brightening up the shorter hours of daylight.
Even though the daylight hours are shorter in the fall, the brilliant colors of yellow, orange, red, and green associated with autumn make for bright and cheerful craft decorations.
Corn Husk Autumn Decoration
This bright, colorful autumn decoration can be displayed on any flat surface.
Materials:
large plastic soda pop bottle
orange and green tissue paper
dried corn husks (or raffia)
yellow craft construction paper
black marker
clear craft glue and clear tape
Instructions:
Dried corn husks can be prepared by peeling the husks from four ears of corn and letting them dry for three or four days. (Or store-bought raffia can be used.)
A piece of orange tissue paper is measured the same height as the pop bottle up to the base of the neck. The pop bottle is wrapped with the tissue paper. The paper is secured at the back with some clear tape. It is pleated to fit snugly at the base of the neck. The folds are secured with glue or small pieces of clear tape.
The corn husks are torn into strips. Or strips of raffia are cut to about six to eight inches long. One end of each strip is glued all around the top of the bottle, at the base of the neck. (Children should be assisted with any sharp utensils.)
Two thin strips of green tissue paper are wound around the neck of the bottle to cover it and hide the glued ends of the corn husks. The paper is secured with glue or clear tape.
A black marker is used to draw shapes for the eyes, nose and mouth. They are cut out and attached to the front of the bottle.
NOTE: This craft can be repeated using different size bottles to create a "group" display.
Autumn Napkin Rings
These napkins will add a colorful decoration to the table. Or they can be given as a gift.
Materials:
paper towel cylinder
raffia
coloring felt markers or coloring pencils
Instructions:
Four equal pieces are cut off the paper towel cylinder. Each piece should be about one and one half inches in length. (Children should be assisted if using sharp scissors.)
Each piece is decorated with autumn colors and symbols. Each piece is colored as much on the inside as can be reached.
A piece of raffia is tied around the middle of each napkin ring. The loose ends are snipped off.
These napkin rings can be used with cloth or paper napkins in bright autumn colors. They can also be personalized or adapted for other holidays and occasions.
A teacher or group leader can easily adapt these autumn crafts to suit the needs and age level of her group.
