Peek-a-Boo Easter Chick Card

A Springtime Paper Craft for Kids

Mar 5, 2009 Christy Jones

This colorful paper Easter egg card pops open to reveal a cheerful yellow chick inside, ready to say peek-a-boo and happy springtime too.

Baby chicks have long been a symbol of spring and Easter’s promise of new life. Kids and grown-ups alike will enjoy making and receiving this cute peek-a-boo Easter card, either at home or as a class project.

To make the card, you can draw your own egg and chick shapes, or you can download these free Easter chick and egg templates. You can then print and cut out the templates and trace them on the colored paper, or, if your colored paper or cardstock fits in your printer, you can print the templates directly onto the colored paper. Having the chick and egg templates preprinted or traced on the paper can make this craft easier to do with a group of young children.

Supplies:

  • One piece colored paper or cardstock
  • One piece yellow paper or cardstock
  • Markers or crayons
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • One paper brad
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Small adhesive magnet (optional)

Make a Peek-a-Boo Chick Card

  1. Draw, trace, or print a large egg on a piece of colored paper. The egg should take up most of the page.
  2. Cut out the egg, and decorate it as desired. You can leave the egg plain to make it look more natural, or use marker or crayons, or even glitter to make it look like a colorful Easter egg.
  3. Cut the egg in half widthwise using jagged, angular snips to make it look like it’s cracking open.
  4. Overlap the two halves slightly and insert a paper brad through both layers on one edge of the egg. This holds the two halves together and allows the egg to open and close.
  5. Draw, trace, or print the chick outline on a piece of yellow paper. Make sure the chick is small enough to completely hide behind the paper egg.
  6. Draw a small orange triangle for a beak and two ovals or circles for eyes on the chick’s face.
  7. Turn the egg face down and place the chick on top of it. Glue or tape the bottom of the chick to the bottom half of the egg. Leave the top of the chick free.
  8. Write a Happy Easter message on the front of the egg, or on the chick inside.

You can turn the peek-a-boo Easter card into a real chick magnet, and make the it easy to display on a refrigerator, by adding a small adhesive magnet to the back of the chick. You can find adhesive magnet strips in many craft stores, and easily cut the strip to the size you need. This helps turn a simple card into a cute Easter gift.
