Every parent and grandparent enjoys homemade valentines from their toddler or preschooler but these ideas are extra special because they are personalized by the child.

Toddler Footprint and Handprint Valentines

  1. Use water soluble and non-toxic paint whenever doing art projects with toddlers and be sure your preschooler is covered or wearing old play clothes. Let toddlers select which color paint they want to use for this personalized art project.
  2. Dip hands in colorful paint or paint it on to apply more evenly. If the preschooler is dipping her own hands in the paint, it is helpful to use a shallow dish with a thin layer of paint such as a paper plate.
  3. Gently press the child's hand onto butcher paper or construction paper.
  4. Repeat with the toddler's other hand and both feet making sure to leave a good impression with visible toes and fingers. You might have to try more than once to get it right since pre-K kids can be wiggly sometimes!
  5. Let the child's impressions dry before cutting out the toddler feet and handprints.
  6. Glue the preschooler's prints onto a poster board or large sheet of construction paper and help the child decorate it with hearts and other Valentine's Day symbols.
  7. Write a clever saying such as “I love you from the tips of my fingers to the tips of my toes” and help the child write their name or write it for them depending on the skill of the toddler.

A toddler could also create a Hug Valentineby only using handprints and writing “I love you THIS much” in between the handprints on the Valentine's Day card.

Either way the preschooler chooses the personalized card with foot and hand impressions will be a cherished valentine for years to come.

Preschooler Photo Silhouette Valentines Card

  1. Silhouettes are a very personal thing as no two are identical, so toddlers will love creating this unique card for their loved ones on Valentine's Day.
  2. Use a spotlight type of flashlight or film projector to cast a shadow of the wall.
  3. Trace an outline of the toddler's silhouette on black paper by taping the paper to the wall where the child's shadow is.
  4. Help the child cut out the silhouette so it will be recognizable by the parent. Using black paper for the toddlers silhouette will give it a classic feel but you can choose other colors if the child prefers.
  5. Let the preschooler glue his silhouette onto a large card and decorate with hearts, quotes, sayings and other Valentine's Day greetings.
  6. Either fold the toddler's card into a large greeting card type of valentine or roll it up like a scroll and tie it with a red ribbon.
