President’s Day CraftsFebruary Activities and Projects for Children
President's Day is a good time for children to learn a little about the history of our country and to begin to think about what makes a good leader.
Tired of making log cabins and stove pipe hats for President’s Day? Try making a presidential bobble head or have your children write an essay about what they would do if they were president. Presidential Bobble HeadsPrint the templates below to create your own presidential bobble head. The body and the head should both be printed as a full 8.5X11 page. Cut the silhouettes out and then use a brad to connect the head to the body. Presidential Silhouette PuzzlePrint just the head template and cut it out on black cardstock or craft foam. Have your child cut it out into several pieces to create a puzzle. Have them put their puzzle back together. Friends and Enemies – How Leaders LeadHave children read the quotes below. Help them to understand anything that is difficult (Washington’s quote is long and does use words that might be unfamiliar words). Then have them discuss how these presidents felt about their friends and their enemies. Discuss what might make them feel the way they do about their friends and enemies. Ask the children to talk about how they feel about friends and enemies. Who do they agree with more? Who do they think is wrong? Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation. George Washington I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends. Abraham Lincoln I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made. Franklin D. Roosevelt Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names. John F. Kennedy If I Were PresidentHave children write an essay about what they would do if they were President. Perhaps have them include their own quotable quote about friends or enemies. Here are some ideas to help get their essay started.
