St. Patrick's' Day Paper Plate Wreath

An Easy March Craft for Kids

Mar 6, 2009 Christy Jones

The pot of gold at the end of this rainbow and shamrock paper plate wreath makes a lucky greeting for St. Patrick's Day visitors.

It’s also a simple craft for kids that’s great to make at home, or as part of a classroom activity or group project. To make the wreath, you’ll need a paper plate and some basic craft supplies. You can either draw the shamrocks and pot of gold yourself (or have older kids draw their own), or you can download the free St. Patrick’s Day shamrock and pot of gold patterns. You can then print the patterns on plain paper and trace them on green and black paper, or you can print them directly on green paper to make the craft even easier.

To make this craft with very young children, you may want to have the shamrocks and pot of gold precut for them, and work with them to draw the rainbow and assemble the wreath.

St. Pat's Day Wreath Project Supplies:

  • One paper plate
  • Green paper
  • Black paper
  • Scrap of yellow paper
  • Colored markers or crayons
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Green ribbon (optional)

Make a St. Patrick’s Day Wreath

  1. Cut away the center of the paper plate, leaving only the rim. (You may need to punch a hole in the plate using a pencil or scissors to get it started. Make sure to have an adult do this part.)
  2. Draw a rainbow along the top half of the paper plate rim using colored markers or crayons. This is a great chance for young kids to practice putting their colors in rainbow order.
  3. Draw or trace a kettle-shaped pot on black paper. Cut out the pot.
  4. Cut a small scrap of yellow paper into a scalloped shape to make the coins for the pot of gold. Glue the gold to the top of the pot. Draw circles on the yellow paper using an orange or gold marker or crayon to make the gold look more like coins (optional).
  5. Write “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” on the pot (optional). Since marker or crayon can be difficult to see on black paper, you may need to write on a scrap of white paper and glue it to the pot to get it to show.
  6. Glue the pot to the side of the wreath, at the end of the rainbow.
  7. Draw, trace, or print about four shamrocks on green paper. Draw lines on the shamrocks using a green marker or crayon to make them look more three-dimensional (optional).
  8. Cut out the shamrocks and arrange them along the bottom part of the paper plate rim so that they’re slightly overlapping, and completely cover the paper plate. Glue the shamrocks to the wreath.

You can hang the St. Patrick’s Day wreath on a door by hooking the paper plate directly over a nail, or by adding a loop of ribbon to the top of the wreath. Simply cut a piece of green ribbon, and glue both ends to the back of the top of the wreath.
