Let your child's individual creative mind shine with these fun Valentine's Day card activities, while teaching the art of thoughtful giving.

There are several different ways to make a Valentine's Day card. Whether it be from scrap material, paints, markers, or simple construction paper, use what materials you have at home (or go to a local store to purchase a few extras) to let your child create his very own to give to someone special. Enjoy more Valentine's Day Arts and Crafts with your child when you're finished creating cards!

Doily Valentine's Day Card

This traditional card is still popular with its elegant design. Using scrap doilies or purchased ones from the craft section of most super stores (some are even in the shape of a heart), let your child create the cover of a construction paper card. Provide heart stickers to decorate the rest of the card, inside and out.

Foil and Chalk Valentine's Day Card

This is a very simple card craft using foil and pink and purple chalk. If you don’t have chalk, you can use markers or crayons instead. Fold a card from a chosen piece of colored construction paper. Cut a heart shape out of the front of the card. Make sure to save the cutout. Let your child cut several pieces off of the foil, color with marker, chalk or crayon, and then glue onto the heart cutout. Paste the foiled cutout on a plain sheet of square paper, and then glue the edges of the sheet on the inside of the card so the decorated foil part shows through the front heart that is cut open.

Heart Collage Valentine's Day Card

Have several different colors of construction paper (Valentine's colors) and fold them all in half. This is a great opportunity to show your younger child how to cut a heart shape. Draw the half heart on the crease of the fold and after demonstrating, let your child cut a few shapes out as well. Make sure to do several different sizes with each different color.

Scrap Material Valentine's Day Card

With this craft, you can use old buttons, cut out material, lace, curtains, sheers, wrapping paper, wall paper, foam pieces, sequins, or old greeting/Valentine's day cards (or anything else you can find around the house!) After folding the construction paper into a card, let your child create his Valentine's Day card masterpiece!

Ideas for Decorating the Inside of the Valentine's Day Card

You can use material to make a square outline and write the message in the center. Stickers, whether foam or holographic or plain, add a special touch as well. With paint, let your child put her hand prints in the center, palms side to side to form the shape of a heart. When dry, add a picture or a message or both. Stamps are another fun idea.

Pop-Up Valentine's day cards are also easy and fun to create. Cut out a heart shape and a long rectangular strip of paper. Let your child fold the long strip of paper back and forth to make a “spring”. Glue heart to one end of the strip, and the other end of the strip gets glued to the inside of the card. You can use this idea for other things like pictures of your child, or a cutout of a bear with open arms (for a hug).

Take this time of creative expression as an opportunity to bond with your child and observe her personal, unique artistic ability. For more fun ideas to spend Valentine's Day with your child, try Valentine's Day Recipes for Kids!
